Westminster High School is home to many exceptional students who often go unnoticed for their hard work. This month, one of those students was recognized for her efforts in athletics as well as academics.
Westy Senior, Gillian Muniz won the ‘East 5A Metro Athletic Conference Student-Athlete of the Month Award’ for her work on the volleyball court as well as in the classroom.
‘Gilly’ as she’s known by family and friends, is the first Westminster High School student to receive the honor.
Nominated for the award by District 50 Athletic Director Glenda Bates, Muniz earned the winning votes from other Athletic Directors within the 5A Eastern Conferences.
The award was anything but an easy win; all fall-sport athletes within the conference were eligible for nomination granted they matched their athletic value academically. “It feels great to earn this. I would have never expected to win out of so many athletes” said Muniz.
Gilly has more to offer than just her athletic prowess and modesty. She maintains a 3.58 GPA, although she admits it’s a tough balancing act. “I practice and study, then practice and study” said Muniz. “It doesn’t leave much time for a social life.”
On top of being captain of the girls’ volleyball and basketball teams, Gilly is also a trusted student at Westminster High. She can often be found in student leadership committees, giving tours of the school and producing student videos when she is not in her IB classes. She was also recognized at this past week’s Board of Education meeting to highlight her accomplishments.
