It’s hard to imagine having lunch with a better group of employees than the ones who got together on Monday to celebrate each other.
They all had Fred in common.
This year’s recipients of District 50 FRED Awards were invited to a special lunch to recognize them for their commitment to quality work that goes above and beyond their job descriptions. As a treat, they were able to spend time with Fred Shea, the hardworking postman who is the subject of the bestselling motivational book The Fred Factor.
Author Mark Sanborn profiled Fred after becoming aware of the exemplary work of the postman in his neighborhood. Sanborn’s message was that everyone has the potential to be like Fred if they understand “how passion in your work and life can turn the ordinary into the extraordinary.”
Fred just recently retired and told the group that he wished the world had more people like them adding, “It makes your job and life better when you are surrounded by people like this.”
Fred said that for as long as he can remember, he took great satisfaction in doing a job well. That knowledge also allowed him to sleep well at night. He gave credit to his wife Kathy as well, who he has been married to for 39 years.
In addition to the lunch and public recognition, all of the Fred Award winners received a Fred pin, a special plague and a signed copy of the book. The last three recipients were honored last week at the Board of Education meeting and you can read more about them here.
