How does School Choice enrollment work?
Westminster Public Schools (WPS) is an open-enrollment district, meaning families can apply to attend any of our schools. Admission criteria and transportation options vary by school and are also subject to space limitations.
To learn more about WPS, please view our Enrollment Guide.
Here is how School Choice works:
- Research WPS schools online here.
- Gather any necessary documents (see question 14 for details)
- Step Rank your student’s top three preferences and select them on the School Choice application during the Round 1 window. The School Choice window for the 2023-24 school year opens on January 9, 2023, and closes Feb. 17, 2023.
-
Do I have a better chance of getting into a school based on how I rank it?
No! We suggest listing your school choices in order of preference. If you do not get your first-choice school, you will be moved down to your next highest preference.
-
How does the School Choice process match students to schools?
School Choice applies to students from kindergarten through 12th grade, wishing to attend a school other than their neighborhood, or home school. Students are accepted based on space availability and in the following priority order:
- In-district families with siblings already attending the school selected
- In-district families with no siblings attending the school selected
- Out-of-district employee children
- Returning out-of-district students
- New out-of-district students
Decisions are made on a first come, first served basis if space is available in the school, grade, or program requested.
Final decisions will be made on a rolling basis but within two weeks of the closing of the enrollment window. Decisions are final and may not be appealed.

-
Is my child still guaranteed a spot at our home school?
Yes. The School Choice process does not change district policies, including a guaranteed spot for grades kindergarten through 12th grade at your home school. If your student is accepted via Choice into a school that is not your home school, then that school becomes your “home school” and enrollment at your home school will no longer be guaranteed.
-
After enrolling in a school other than my home school, am I able to return to my home school?
To return to your home school, you may apply during any of our open-enrollment windows. Applications submitted outside of an enrollment window will not be considered until the next enrollment window opens.
-
If one of my children is enrolled in a school that is not on our guaranteed home school, will my other children be enrolled into the same school?
Siblings are given high priority for current and returning students during Round 1. Most siblings are enrolled into the same choice school. However, enrollment for siblings at a choice school cannot always be guaranteed due to space limitations.
-
Will WPS provide transportation for my child to their assigned school?
Transportation is not guaranteed. Parents are responsible for getting children to school.
Please visit the transportation website for information.
Students enrolled in a school rather than their home school are responsible for their own transportation. If space is available on an existing transportation route, parents/guardians may apply for the district’s ridership program.
