Scott Carpenter Funeral This Weekend in Boulder
Scott Carpenter, the second American to orbit the earth, and the namesake of District 50’s Scott Carpenter Middle School, will be buried Saturday in Boulder, the city he was born in 88 years ago.
The 11 a.m. funeral is open to the public and is being held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1419 Pine St. Because of the possibility of a large turnout a nearby chapel and parish hall will also be open with audio being piped in to the rooms.
Fellow astronauts, including Former Senator John Glenn, are expected to attend the funeral to honor Carpenter. He will receive military honors before his body is cremated and buried at his family's ranch in Steamboat Springs.
Plans are in the works for the planting of two memorial trees in the astronaut’s memory at Scott Carpenter Middle School.
After Carpenter’s heroic space mission in 1962, a community member came forward to suggest naming the school, which had recently opened, after Carpenter. He agreed and the school has carried his name ever since.
