Holiday Season at ‘Have a Heart’
The holidays are a time for giving, and the Westminster community is no exception. “Have a Heart” is a non-profit organization that serves the needs of school-age children and their families in the District 50 community. All services at “Have a Heart” are free and 100% of donations go directly to families in need.
The organization distributes clothes and food to the community on the second and fourth Saturday of each month between 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. They also have a special Christmas distribution day where families also receive toys and a Christmas food box.
Though “Have a Heart” has been around since 1996, many newcomers to the community are not aware of the program and don’t take advantage of it. “I think there are many kids who are needy in this economy but we are not reaching them,” said Jo Smith, who founded the organization. Smith was a one-time member of the District 50 Board of Education and in that role she became aware of how many children were in need.
Smith encourages teachers and staff to identify children in need and refer them to the organization for help.
