LASA Recognized as ‘Rising Stars’
Ever since the Latin American Student Association (LASA) was formed at Westminster High School four years ago, the group has been at the forefront of the school’s efforts to promote diversity and address key issues in society.
WHS has always valued the group’s work, but this week LASA received international acclaim.
PeaceJam, an international organization which promotes peace, civil justice and diversity, honored LASA with its prestigious “Rising Star” award at the Hero Awards Celebration at the Denver Center for Performing Arts on Wednesday night. LASA was also recognized by the Board of Education at Tuesday’s regularly scheduled meeting.
In its early years, LASA focused on issues surrounding undocumented students, and while LASA continues to focus on the Latino culture, members have expanded their work to focus on other groups as well. LASA’s activities include public outreach opportunities and voter registration drives, to name just a few of their efforts.
