English Learning Students Receive Grant
District 50’s English Language Learners (ELL) got some help this week in their drive to learn the language.
It came, appropriately enough, from Groove Automotive in the form of a $3500 Drive for Education Grant. District-Wide English Language Development Specialist Lulu Buck applied for and received the grant which helps students become proficient in English. About 45% percent of District 50 students are English Language Learners.
“These students are my heroes. They work hard in trying to learn English and continue their education,” said Buck. “Making the English language more accessible to our students is a big priority.”
Representatives from Groove Automotive came to Westminster High to present the check (in Spanish and English) to District 50. Teacher Teri Hutchinson was there to accept the check on behalf of the English Language Development (ELD) Division with her class.
“The program is expanding,” said Hutchinson. “We are thankful for the resources.”
The $3500 will be used to purchase curriculum materials and computer apps for ELL students.
