• Superintendent Cabinet Focuses on Community Solutions

    WCI

Calling for a “community hug for our kids when they are not in school,” Superintendent Pamela Swanson hosted her first meeting last week of the newly formed Westminster Children’s Initiative which is working to find community based solutions to challenges facing District 50 children and their families.

WCI2 The meeting brought together leaders from various backgrounds including the City of Westminster, social service agencies, law enforcement and high school students. Members will meet four times during the course of the year in an effort to ensure that young people in the community excel from cradle to career.

“Our schools can’t do it alone,” said Swanson. “We think this group can provide an even bigger and better impact on our young people.”

During the group’s first meeting members broke up into small groups to identify the keys issues facing the community today. There was a consensus on a need for more out of school youth programs and increased support for programs to deal with diverse issues like affordable housing and substance abuse.

“The youth are our future,” said Doug Hall, Fire Chief of the City of Westminster.

District 50 Chief Operations Officer James Duffy echoed the sentiment. “Everyone has a piece of the puzzle,” he said.

And while the group identified numerous areas of concern, Westminster High School student leaders were quick to point out that the challenges are not unique to Westminster High School and District 50. “There are so many good things going on at our school that we shouldn’t focus on just the negative,” said Senior Tommy Phung, President of the Student Council. “We have an amazing school.”
