CenterStage Theater Company Presents ‘Just Like Us’
The first ever high school production of the play “Just Like Us” that looks at the controversial issues of immigration status and its impact on high school students will be performed this week at Westminster High School. It’s a moving, true story that addresses issues felt by some young people in our community.
The play was adapted by Karen Zacarias from the book by Helen Thorpe, and follows the lives of four young women - two legally documented and two undocumented - as they contemplate their lives after high school when their legal status will have a dramatic impact on their life choices. In fact, Thorpe came to the District in 2009, just after the book was published, to talk about her book.
“Just Like Us” first appeared on stage in 2013 at the Denver Center for Performing Arts. As part of the high school production, the Director from the DCPA show came to Westminster High School to talk with the cast and crew. He provided his perspective on the challenges of bringing the show to DCPA
In addition, the University of Northern Colorado’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts has been supporting the production by bringing the students to Greeley to get a feel for the theater environment on a college campus.
“Just Like Us” runs November 10th-14th in the Black Box Theater at Westminster High School. Tickets are $10 for General Admission and $6 for Westminster High School students.
