Readers are Leaders
Harris Park Elementary won the November ‘Readers are Leaders’ contest sponsored by Denver 7 News.
‘Readers are Leaders’ is a non-profit group that helps elementary schools upgrade their libraries and obtain additional funding to keep contemporary literature on their shelves. Each month, ‘Readers are Leaders’ choose a winner to receive a $1000 prize.
Harris Park Physical Educator Tricia Corneau saw the opportunity for the contest and applied.
“It was so exciting to win!” said Corneau upon learning the news of the victory.
On November 19th, Denver 7 News meteorologist Lisa Hidalgo paid a visit to Harris Park to present the prize. Hidalgo spoke with the students about the importance of reading and how it could help them do anything; even become a meteorologist.
Hidalgo also took time to read The Berenstain Bears: Gone Fishin’!, before rewarding each student with a copy of the book to take home.
Hidalgo presented the check to Corneau and Harris Park Librarian, Laurie Perila, for the library.
“It will help buy high-interest books to encourage students to read and it will also help buy some non-fiction books that are greatly needed in our library,” said Perila. “It will mean having more books to get into the hands of the students so they can enjoy the magic of literature.”
