Saturday, April 20 marks the 20-year anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting that claimed 13 lives and forever changed how parents, students, teachers and administrators look at school safety.
The first student killed that day was Rachel Scott. After her death, her family discovered her private writings and learned of her efforts to reach out to struggling students and her dream of a more compassionate, understanding world. Her spirit was the genesis for the creation of Rachel’s Challenge, a program that is used in schools across the country to promote tolerance and teach student’s valuable life skills.
Rachel’s Challenge is incorporated into the curriculum at John E. Flynn A Marzano Academy and Rachel’s father, Darrell was recently there to see Rachel’s legacy at work. Watch the What's Up WPS exclusive above to learn more about Rachel's Challenge.
Note: The Board of Education will receive an update on the district’s school safety efforts and programs during the April 23 meeting.
