WPS ‘Individual Career Academic Plan’ Honored by State
The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) has named Westminster Public Schools ICAP (Individual Career Academic Plan), “District of the Year” for its ongoing efforts to help students focus on career choices and college preparation.
WPS was selected for the award in competition with districts across the state.
In 2009, the Colorado legislature established ICAP and a requirement that Colorado school districts develop programs to address the needs of all high school students. The WPS Future Center fulfilled that role, and then some, by providing students of all ages the opportunity to utilize the center’s resources and expertise.
Sandy Steiner, Director of Post-Secondary and Work Force Readiness credits her staff for changing students' lives. In a note to her team she wrote, “Thank you for making this a core element of the WPS student experience and for your success in ensuring all other participants in the district understand the value behind this work with students. This work continues to change 'business as usual' and the improved student graduation readiness results are obvious.”
On a related note, the Third Annual WPS Student Hiring Fair is scheduled for April 30-May 2 at the WPS Futures Center from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. It’s a great opportunity for students looking for summer work and graduates interested in long-term career opportunities.
