Back-to-School BBQ sets Students up for Success with Free Backpacks and Supplies

After attending Westminster Public Schools (WPS) 3rd Annual Back-to-School BBQ on August 3, hundreds of WPS students began the 2019-20 school year with a new backpack filled with school supplies. The event saw record attendance with more than 3,000 people visiting Memorial Stadium for a morning filled with food, freebies and fun. 28 WPS departments and community partners rallied to serve our families with resources ranging from free & reduced meal applications to registration for Westy athletics. Click here to view photos from the fun day!

This community celebration would not have been possible without the help of more than 100 WPS staff members and students that volunteered to help welcome and feed our families, hand out backpacks, organize on-field activities and ensure that the morning run smoothly.

Upon entering the gates, each WPS student received a ticket to exchange for a free backpack, courtesy of A Precious Child. After receiving a backpack filled with school supplies, families enjoyed a free meal, visited with our community booths, listened to the Westminster High School Orchestra and Mariachi, visited the face painting booth, played on the field, or practiced their pitch for the dunk tank. Principals Zack White from Skyline Vista and Brian Kosena from John E. Flynn A Marzano Academy took their turns getting dunked along with Skyline Vista’s new Assistant Principal, Justin Adcock.

With more than 15 exciting giveaways, families stuck around until the very end for their chance to win a Google Chromebook and several gift certificates and coupons from local businesses including GQUE BBQ, Chick-Fil-A, Cesar’s Barbershop, Elitch Gardens, Water World and more!
