How will this tour change the way you think, feel, or act about the world?
That was the question Lizania Hernandez Alvarado answered to win a $1,000 scholarship that helps fund her upcoming trip to France. The eighth-grader at Westminster Academy for International Studies (WAIS) was encouraged by her teacher, Chris Kyle to complete an online application and create a 2 to 3-minute video to submit for consideration.
Kyle says Lizania’s video script brought her to tears, “It was just so honest and heartfelt and Lizania has very definite goals about what she wants to do for her future.”
The scholarship is funded by EF Educational Tours, an international education company that specializes in educational travel. Every year, eighth-grade students at WAIS take an international trip to fulfill a part of the school’s mission to expose students to a world beyond Westminster. Lizania and her classmates will travel to France on March 19 and spend nine days exploring sites such as the Palace of Versailles, Louvre Museum, Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame.
The scholarship helps more than just Lizania, she says that since winning, her parents no longer have to stress about making monthly payments. With her trip paid in full, this also means that any fundraising money can flow to the other students that will be joining Lizania in France.
Lizania thanked Ms. Kyle for encouraging her to apply and supporting her throughout the school year. “She has shown me that you can do anything and that it’s possible to achieve anything you want to achieve,” said Lizania.
