WPS Transitions to Remote Learning, January 11 Targeted For Return to In-person Learning

Faced with dangerously high COVID-19 levels in Adams County and a new round of health restrictions for many Colorado counties, Westminster Public Schools made the “difficult” decision to suspend in-person learning through the winter break.

It’s hoped that in-person learning can resume on January 11, with students returning from the holiday break the week prior to remote learning. All plans are subject to change.

“This was a difficult decision but a necessary one,” said Superintendent Pam Swanson. ”The in-person learning option we provided for students for the first ten weeks of the year was invaluable, and staff and students are better prepared than ever for the transition to full-time remote learning.”

Swanson and Board of Education President Ryan McCoy delivered a videotaped message to the community on Saturday, November 14 which you can see above.

The superintendent and the leadership team made the decision after monitoring the trends and numbers in the county and the WPS footprint on a daily basis and also as a result of findings from two days of testing at Westminster High School on November 11 and 12. Just more than 400 students and staff member were tested, resulting in 20 positive cases. That translates to one in 20 positive cases which if seen at a district-wide level would effectively quarantine every school in the district.

In addition, before making the decision, Swanson and her team learned that the state COVID dial, which dictates actions by local counties, was being reconfigured. The new dial creates an additional “red” category that stops short of enacting a “stay at home” order which would cause further economic harm.

The new retractions for Adams County went into effect on Friday, November 19. You can see the details here.
