Earlier this month, the Westminster City Council unanimously approved a request by Westminster Public Schools to change the name of Skyline Vista Park to Orchard Park. Orchard Park Academy is scheduled to open in the fall of 2021 and the existing Skyline Vista Elementary will then be torn down.
The construction of a new school was made possible by the 2018 passage of a mill levy override.
Board of Education President, Ryan McCoy recorded a message to the board requesting the change saying, “Skyline Vista Park offers our students and families an important, healthy outlet in an urban environment. Many people will tell you a neighborhood is defined by its schools and parks and this has been an ideal partnership.”
McCoy added that the name change was a win/win for everyone. “The new school is a significant investment in the southeast part of our district,” he said. “We believe it and the nearby park will play a vital role as a “hub” for the community.”
There is very little cost involved in the name change. New signage will be created at a cost of about $1,000. The name change will be added to future maps, but there is no need to go back and revise existing city maps.
