September “Fred” Winners Put Children First
Richard Diehl, Laurie Sanchez and Debra Qunintana were recognized as Fred Award winners by the Board of Education last week for going out of their way to help students in need.
The FRED award is given out quarterly and is named after a Colorado mail carrier profiled in the book “The Fred Factor” written by author Mark Sanborn. The national bestseller details how, “Passion in your work and life can turn the ordinary into the extraordinary.”
Richard Diehl - Assistant Principal, Colorado STEM Academy
“Richard is so patient and kind to my son. Our son has social and emotional behavior problems and it’s not easy trying to calm him down. Mr. Diehl would go above and beyond to make sure Ryan would take his breaks and reward him for positive things that he’s done. He even created game days for my son to come play with him if he’s done all his work and to take breaks. We almost unenrolled him from the school district because of his needs but everyone at that school was willing to help our child and find a solution.
Laurie Sanchez - Office Assistant, Orchard Park Academy
Laurie is amazing! My daughter was diagnosed with diabetes this year and she has been so attentive to her and made sure she was ok and never needed anything. Every day she took the time out of her day to text or call me to make sure we knew what her sugar levels were. She was also very knowledgeable and a very helpful person through all of this. Although I know my daughter isn't the only child that she takes care of, I have no doubt she is like this with all of these children. It's such a relief to know that our children are cared for and taken care of just as much by someone at school as they are at home. Ms. Sanchez is such an amazing person she deserves the recognition
Debra Quintana - Special Services Assistant, Colorado Sports Leadership Academy
“DQ” has proven to go above and beyond her job duties. She truly cares for her special needs students. “DQ” is always advocating for her students and goes out of her way to make sure her students not only receive meaningful academic tasks but also food, clothes and makes sure their hygiene needs are met. She is a great colleague always looking after others before herself and the district is lucky to have her for over 20 years!
In addition to being publicly recognized at the Board of Education meeting, recipients receive a copy of the book “The Fred Factor”, a lapel pin and an engraved trophy.
