Robert Marzano, one of the most influential educators in America, and a key supporter of the WPS Competency Based System (CBS) received a surprise birthday song and cake during the morning meeting on Friday of the summit, his 75th birthday.
Marzano was caught off-guard by the moment which allowed educators from across the country to let him know how much he has meant to their careers and their students. He wiped away a tear after Superintendent Pam Swanson played Happy Birthday on the piano that was secretly wheeled into the room.
Marzano has written more than 50 books and 200 articles about education over his fifty-plus-year career. A widely regarded education researcher he helped Westminster Public Schools implement CBS more than a decade ago. He also worked directedly with the district to create John E Flynn A Marzano Academy which incorporates Marzano’s education philosophy which seeks to create “High Reliability Schools” across the country.
