WPS Celebrates Excellence

Supported by a record number of entries, the 2021-22 Celebrating Excellence! Awards were handed out in a fun-filled virtual event on April 28 that highlighted the diverse talents and interests of students and staff in Westminster Public Schools. This year’s competition celebrated everything from singing and gymnastics to science and creative writing.

There were also some major surprises.

One student showed her motorcycle racing skills, while another videotaped his trick roping skills; even standing on a horse as he performed.

This year, judges evaluated almost 300 entries in nine categories:

·       Athletics & Agility

·       Creative Writing

·       CTE

·       Let Staff Shine!

·       Pay It Forward

·       Performing Arts

·       STEM

·       Teaching Demonstrations

·       Visual Arts

The Pay it Forward, Athletics and Agility and Let Staff Shine categories were new additions to this year’s competition. The video below shows just some of the entries.

The virtual Celebrating Excellence! competition was first created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Steve Sandoval, Executive Director of Special Services says his team quickly realized they had tapped into something special. “It became an opportunity to transform old thinking into new and fresh ideas,” he said. “It immediately brought out our more introverted students who may not feel comfortable demonstrating their achievements publicly on a stage.”

In addition to recognition in individual categories, the Top Grand Prize Winners received an Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality headset:

Primary Elementary (K-2)

Intermediate Elementary (3-5)
