Note from Superintendent Swanson: May 11, 2022

Dear Westminster Community,

As we get ready to celebrate the end of the school year and all that brings with it, I want to take a quick moment to thank everyone for their hard work during the 2021-22 school year. Coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic and trying to return to “normal” has been challenging, to say the least.

There are two stories in this edition of What’s Up WPS that really capture the spirit and creativity of everyone who works in Westminster Public Schools and how we pulled together to ensure we met the needs of our community during uncertain times.

Last week the Deputy Secretary of Education visited John E. Flynn A Marzano Academy to look at how we used Covid relief dollars to not only make up for lost learning opportunities for students but also go the extra mile to meet their mental health needs. Cindy Marten heard firsthand accounts from students about the importance of a positive learning environment and how students have learned to care for one another. She was inspired and told students she would love to take them with her to Washington D.C. to share their story.

The second example is a program that was created in response to Covid and is so successful we will continue it for years to come. Our Virtual Celebrating Excellence competition provides a forum for students from across the district to share their skills, knowledge and passion with their fellow students and the community.  Students who would never dream of standing before a live audience felt comfortable competing virtually, and this year we have some amazing examples to share.

Our Virtual Celebrating Excellence competition is a remarkable example of how we learned to adapt to the pandemic and successfully engage a whole new group of learners.  It required a lot of work by organizers and judges, but it was so worth it.

If you have a moment, I encourage you to watch the very humorous and engaging awards ceremony.  You will be glad that you did.

I look forward to seeing many of you in the days ahead during our retirement celebration on May 17, the Senior Awards Ceremony on May 19 and student graduations. They are all special events that remind us of the important work we do here in Westminster Public Schools.

Kindest regards,

Dr. Swanson
