BOE Honors Westminster Legacy Foundation Award Winner Michael Linert

On Tuesday, November 8, the WPS Board of Education recognized Michael Linert, Chair of the Westminster High School Performing Arts Department, for his recent honor as the Arts and Culture Award winner from the Westminster Legacy Foundation.

Linert thanked the board for its continuing support of the arts, which he said is vital to a successful school. “We have done some great work together,” he said. He told the BOE that for some of his orchestra and mariachi band students, extracurricular activities have helped them come out of their shells and relate to other kids.

He also explained how he came to learn about mariachi music and why he thinks it is so essential to many students in this community. He even traveled to Ecuador to learn more about Latin American music, which he called “eye-opening.”

Linert received a Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance degree summa cum laude from The Hartt School and a Master of Science in Music Education degree from Indiana University. While the cello is his passion, he plays other instruments, composes music, and sings.
