Universal Pre-K is Finally Here
Universal Pre-K (UPK) is finally here!
Westminster Public Schools is proud to announce their participation in the state-funded program that will save families an average of $6,000 per year on childcare. The launch of UPK Colorado is the result of the voter-approved Proposition EE which builds on Colorado’s long-standing commitment to children and families. UPK Colorado ensures that every child in the year before they are eligible for kindergarten is eligible for state-funded, voluntary preschool beginning in the 2023-24 school year.
There are full and half-day options for 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds with additional hours of care available to families with qualifying factors.
Are all WPS Schools Participating in UPK?
Yes! All PK-5 and PK-8 schools in our district have registered with UPK Colorado so that your family can choose the school that is right for you. We have 15 preschools to choose from!
How Do I Get Started?
All parents and caregivers, regardless of income, county, or school district, MUST APPLY for a Pre-K spot using the Universal Pre-K portal for the state of Colorado.
When your child has been matched to a preschool program, you will need to accept the match offer. The matching process considers hours needed, spaces available, siblings, and district boundaries among other factors. This process may take up to 4 weeks to ensure the best fit for your child.
When Do I Register with WPS?
Once you accept your match for a Pre-K program on the UPK Colorado portal, you will be given instructions on how to register with Westminster Public Schools. This process may take up to 4-6 weeks.
Who is Eligible?
- 4-year-olds* are eligible for free full day preschool, Monday-Friday
- 3-year-olds* are eligible for free ½ day programming.
- *Age based on Oct. 1st cutoff date
- If your child is not yet 3-years-old by Oct. 1st, they may apply for a spot at our tuition-based Early Learning Center at F.M. Day, which accepts children from 3-months-old.
What If I Need More Hours Than the State Provides?
If you need more hours than allotted by the state, WPS may be able to provide additional hours at no additional cost to you.
Is My Child Guaranteed a Spot?
Spots are limited. Enrollment priority will be granted to families living inside our district borders before opening spots up to other families.
