Captivating Mural Unveiled at Colorado STEM Academy, Blending Art and Education

In a vibrant display of creativity and cultural appreciation, the Colorado STEM Academy unveiled a stunning mural in the middle school gymnasium that seamlessly integrates art and education. The piece, prominently featuring the letters S-T-E-M, serves as a visual representation of the school's commitment to science, technology, engineering, and math.

The mural, a collaborative effort between local Denver artist, Juls Mendoza, and CO STEM Academy students, captures the essence of STEM disciplines through a kaleidoscope of colors and intricate designs. Each letter in S-T-E-M is transformed into a unique canvas, showcasing the interconnected nature of these academic pillars. Adorning the painted characters of the artwork are masks that celebrate whimsy and a sense of make-believe. They serve as powerful symbols, highlighting the rich tapestry of the student body at the Colorado STEM Academy.

“When the families and students came to the community painting night and got to meet Juls and talk to him in Spanish, you could see their smiles and their faces light up,” says Michelle Music, Westminster High School Art Teacher who helped connect CO STEM Academy and Juls together. “I think our community deserves to see themselves reflected in the art that is up in our community,” says Music.

Westminster Public Schools (WPS) Board of Education Member, Christine Martinez, spoke at the unveiling event, “I am always impressed by the innovation coming from our creative arts department, our teachers, our staff, the things they are doing for our students…it is such an honor to be a part of this and making sure it happens.”

The mural was officially unveiled during a ceremony attended by students, parents, faculty, and community members. Once a blank canvas, the gymnasium is now a vibrant testament to the school's commitment to fostering a dynamic learning environment that celebrates academic excellence and cultural diversity.
