Wish for Wheels Kicks off Summer with Free Bikes for Sherrelwood Students
For the past six years, Wish for Wheels has given every first grader at Sherrelwood Elemenary a bicycle and this year was no exception. On May 21, the Wish for Wheels team gathered in the school’s parking lot and handed out bicycles and helmets as families returned their Chromebooks to mark the end of the school year.
“Wish for Wheels helps us serve our Sherrelwood Community once again,” said Sherrelwood principal, Cindy Davis. “We appreciate their partnership.”
In the wake of COVID-19, Wish for Wheels looked for ways to restructure in an attempt to continue to give bikes to children in need. As social distancing stays in place, it is important that all children have the means to get outside in a safe manner.
"I'll go outside and ride the bike today,” said Isabella Mendez, a level 1 student. “Sherrelwood is a really great school and the teachers are really nice."
To help serve all of Sherrelwood’s level 1 class, Wish for Wheels launched a GoFundMe and in just 23 days, donors contributed more than $2,300. In the past, Wish for Wheels has also given bicycles to students at Hodgkins Leadership Academy, Tennyson Knolls Elementary and other schools in the district.
