STEM challenges are a regular part of our instruction at Colorado STEM Academy. A STEM challenge is designed to get kids to use our design thinking model where students Analyze a problem, Design a sketch or model to solve the problem, Develop a prototype, Implement a solution, and Evaluate a result. The image below shows some of our level 4 and 5 students working out a problem to stack cups using only string and a team of four people--success!

One of the five specific actions that can be performed as part of our standard response protocol is a HOLD. During a hold, students and staff are instructed to stay in their classroom or area. During these situations, classroom business resumes as usual with the exception of moving between spaces. Adults and staff are trained to check that all doors are locked and account for all students.
