Beginning of Year Assessment Reports

Students brought home fall assessment reports in Thursday folders this week. Here's what to expect:

  • DIBELS are coming home with students in grades K-5. This is a 1:1 reading assessment to assess phonological awareness, fluency, and comprehension in the upper grades. The report provides information to families along with ideas to help increase your students reading abilities.
  • STAR Renaissance is an online assessment for both math and reading. The assessment is an adaptive test that adjusts based on students demonstration of mastery of concepts. Students in grades 1-8 will be receiving these reports.
  • CMAS assessment reports are coming home to students who took the test last spring in grades 3-8. This provides a snapshot of how your child is performing on this normed assessment across the state of Colorado.

If you have questions regarding your child's assessment scores, please reach out to your child's teacher(s) or feel free to contact me directly.

Safety and Security

One of the five specific actions that can be performed as part of our standard response protocol is a LOCKDOWN. During a lockdown, students are trained to move away from sight, maintain silence, and do not open the door. Teachers are trained to recover any students in the hallway, lock the classroom door and turn off the lights. We work in partnership with the Westy Police Department to check on each classroom and help ensure safety of our students and staff.

TikTok and Social Media Reminder

Most parents did not have the challenges and joys of growing up in the social media world. It's a tough skill to learn as adolescent brains are still developing. Unfortunately this combination can result in some tough consequences. Please talk with your children about what is appropriate and inappropriate when it comes to Social Media. Impersonating another student, teacher, or school account or posting inappropriate content can result in suspension, possible expulsion, and even a referral to law enforcement. We appreciate our parent partnership and support in helping prevent these issues.

Social- Emotional Support

In the coming weeks, your student will be getting more in-depth SEL lessons from our Mental Health Interventionists. Katie Hight will be pushing into 5-8th grade classes and Sarah McKee will be pushing into preK-4th grade classrooms. These lessons will focus on the 5 CASEL Competencies or Domains: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making. Students will get a lesson tailored to their age/level that will target the WPS Proficiency Scales that the district has identified. The goal of SEL in the district is to transform how we as adults and students interact with ourselves, each other, and the world around us.

Looking forward, September's overall SEL theme is Self-Awareness or the ability to understand one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior across contexts. This includes capacities to recognize one’s strengths and limitations with a well-grounded sense of confidence and purpose. Lesson themes vary by level but will focus on either Emotion Regulation, Self-Discipline, or Accurate Self-Perception. Mrs. Hight and Mrs. McKee are excited to provide this type of support and education to your student.
