Podcast Spotlights CTE Program

The Colorado Dream podcast

“The Colorado Dream” a Colorado Public Radio (CPR) series looking at how Career Technical Education (CTE) prepares high school students for the day after graduation is bringing a lot of attention to the CTE program at Westminster High School. 

Reporter Stephanie Daniels spent hours visiting classrooms and talking with students about how CTE has shaped their education and plans for the future. She created a four-part series that you can listen to here. She also spoke with teachers and advisory board members about the importance of options for students. 

The podcast focused on four specific pathways for students:

  • Career Education: Wolf Bites:  An examination of the high school’s Wolf Bites food truck which is ­­­­operated by culinary students. In 2019, the district received a CTE grant from the state which paid for the food truck.  This episode follows them as they prepare for their first paid catering gig and features a video cinema arts student who helped produce the school's Wolf Bites video documentary. 
  • Career Education: The First: Biomedical Science is the most popular Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway at the school. This episode follows three teens who will be first-generation college students. They are using the Biomedical Science and Health Occupations pathways to prepare for college and careers in the medical field.
  • Career Education: Urban Ag: Even though Westminster is part of the sprawling, urban metro Denver area, Westminster has found ways to hang on to its agricultural roots.   This installment looks at the CTE agriculture pathway and profiles two students who’ve found success. 
  • Career Education: Tomorrow Starts Today: “Tomorrow Starts Today,” is the slogan for Westminster High School’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. This episode features current and former students from the aerospace engineering and cybersecurity classes who want to work in some of Colorado’s fastest-growing industries.

The podcast was produced as part of a fellowship program that supports new reporting into issues related to postsecondary education and technical education.
