RANUM SNACK CART PREPARES STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND BEYOND
Once a month, Connections teacher, Elizabeth Eiler works with Ranum Middle School’s students with special needs to organize a snack cart that travels to different classrooms and offices throughout the school. Eiler teaches students to follow recipes for smoothie preparation and goes through all the items in the cart to remind students how much each item is worth. Student leaders at Ranum who have shown an interest in working with students with special needs have signed up to assist wherever they can whether that be helping to count change or handing out snacks.
“We’re really hoping to prepare them for both high school and beyond with some social skills, as well as skills that help them work on counting change and working with money and also making things, following recipes and directions and just interacting with people who they might not normally interact with,” said Eiler. “That can help set them up for future jobs, or other classes that they might take in high school that might be building on some of these skills as well.”
