Students Raise Thanksgiving Funds with Turkey Trot 5K

Students at Shaw Heights Middle School kicked-off the season of giving with a Turkey Trot 5K fundraiser on Nov. 1. More than 250 sixth, seventh and eighth-grade students paid a $10 registration fee to participate in the fundraiser and race.

“They love to help their community and it shows,” said Shaw Heights principal, Mike Carlson.

With the amount of money that students raised, Shaw Heights will purchase 40 Thanksgiving meal baskets from Food for Hope. Every Shaw Heights family is entered in the drawing to win the free meal and baskets will be distributed to winners on Nov. 15 and 16.

The 5K took students throughout the Shaw Heights neighborhood as deputies from the Westminster Police Department escorted the runners along the course. Some Shaw Heights staff members also laced up their race shoes or strapped on their roller skates to join students in the race.

18 winners, three boys and three girls from each grade level, were called to the podium to receive their medals. First place winners also received a $100 gift card, second place received $50 gift cards and third place received $25 gift cards thanks to a donation from a community member, Martin Coster.

In the spirit of giving thanks, Carlson asked all winners to write a thank you letter to Coster for his generous contribution.
