A brand new era is underway for the Westminster High School varsity baseball team under new head coach Curt Sims and the long-time coach says he is optimistic about the future.
“I walked into a great situation with a great group of kids,” said Sims, who comes to WHS after coaching stints at Littleton High School, Bishop Machebeuf High School, and Colorado Academy. A lifelong athlete, Sims is a graduate of the University of Central Arkansas where he played both baseball and basketball.
Sims takes over a veteran team with 17 of the 18 players being seniors. The lone non-senior is sophomore standout, Jesus Mayo. Sims likes what he sees. “They have been playing baseball together for a long time and I told them I was just going to let them play. Have fun and go play,” said Coach Sims.
When asked what will be different about the team now that he is in charge, Sims says his team will be more aggressive on running the bases. “We have some speedsters and really smart baseball players,“ he said. “You have to put the pressure on teams and we hope this will help us standout.”
The Wolves started the season with a 2-4 record and are now gearing up for the start of conference play.
