‘Beauty and the Beast’ Selected for WHS Spring Production

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast will be coming to the Joanna Ramsey Theatre in March featuring students from the high school, elementary and middle school levels to help tell the classic musical. In addition, Director Kathryn Donaldson and the Creative Arts Pipeline will be working with the award-winning Boulder Dinner Theater to procure professional sets and costumes for the show.Beauty and the Beast The Broadway Musical

“It is important to provide students with opportunities to work on stage alongside professional organizations and artists when possible,” said Dr. Justin Davis, the WPS Creative Arts Pipeline Coordinator. “It’s an incredibly valuable experience for all our kids, but particularly for those students who want to continue in the world of theater beyond high school.”

Here is a short look at the Boulder Dinner Theater’s production from last year.

The classic story, which Disney popularized as an animated movie and then brought to Broadway, is based on a French fairy tale of the same name. It tells the story of Belle, a young woman from a small French village, and her relationship with a prince who is turned into a beast as punishment for having a cold, uncaring heart. The beast must conquer his anger and find love before all is lost.

The play had a remarkable 13-year run on Broadway and has been produced in 37 countries worldwide.

“We chose a family-friendly musical that could involve not only our high school students but our elementary and middle school students as well,” noted Davis. ”It has always been a part of the director’s vision to have at least one-hundred students from across the district participate.”

Staff and volunteers from outside of the high school are being recruited to help with key aspects of the large production. “It’s all creative hands on deck!” says Davis. To find out how you can get involved with the show, contact the WPS Creative Arts Pipeline at 720-542-5434, or email Justin Davis directly at jdavis@mywps.org.

The show will run on Friday, March 13th and Saturday, March 14th, at 7:00 PM at the Joanna Ramsey Theatre at Westminster High School. A special matinee performance will take place on Sunday, March 15th.

Admission will be $8.00 for students and $10.00 for adults. Tickets are on sale here wps.booktix.com.
