National ‘Dignity at Work’ Program Profiles WHS Principal
Westminster High School Principal Kiffany Kiewiet received a much-deserved shout out from the “Dignity at Work” project operated by the Washington, D.C. based International Labour Organization (ILO), an agency of the United Nations.
The ILO’s mission is to “advance social justice by promoting decent work.”
Kiewiet was profiled on the ILO’s website where she describes herself as, “not the typical high school principal.”
The organization has taken a special interest in the high school’s Career Technical Education (CTE) program where students can receive both college credit and industry certification while still in high school.
Last fall, world-famous photographer John Isaac spent the day at WHS taking pictures for a photographer project titled “Dignity at Work: The American Experience.”
In the profile, Kiewiet details her journey becoming a school principal and the pride she takes in helping students reach their full potential.
“We change the perception of what kids think they can do,” she is quoted as saying. “A lot of our kids come here saying ‘I can’t.’ They leave saying ‘I can’ and asking ‘what can I do next?’”
She also reflects on the challenges of teaching students during the COVID-19 Pandemic. “My job feels more important than ever. I’ve never been more confident about how important education is and how important the school community is,” she said.
