Wolves to Play Football in the Spring Season

The Westminster High School football team will take the field in the spring “C” season as teams adjust to health concerns created by the COVID-19 pandemic. The first game will be played the week of March 11.

Schedules are being finalized, but the Wolves will likely play other teams from the Metro 1 Conference including traditional rivals Adams City, Boulder and Northglenn. Also to be determined is a date for the homecoming game which will coincide with the traditional homecoming parade and other school activities.CHSAA flag

Earlier this year, the Colorado High School Athletics and Activities Association (CHSAA) moved all football games to the spring, but after significant pushback from some of the high school football programs, CHSSA reconsidered and allowed schools to choose between and fall and spring season. The deadline for a final decision was Monday morning.

WPS released a statement to the community explaining its decision to opt for spring football:

“Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of every student. We are committed to ensuring our student-athletes are properly conditioned in order to safely compete and complete a football season.”

Gabe Trujillo, Director of District Athletics/Activities & Human Resources for WPS is also a CHSSA board member and said the spring start is in the best interests of the community. “I am thankful for all of the students, parents and our community for understanding the difficulties we have had getting back to normalcy for our athletics,” he said. “We will do our very best to ensure we are creating safe opportunities for our student-athletes.  Let's stay Westy Strong!"

CHSSA has identified key dates surrounding the spring football season:

  • Start of practice: 2/25
  • First game: 3/11
  • Round 1 of playoffs: 4/24
  • Semifinals: 5/1
  • Championships: 5/8
