Girls Basketball Team Goes Big Time at Ball Arena
Few athletes get the chance to play the game they love in a professional sports arena, but that’s just what happened to the Westminster High School girls basketball team. In a rare opportunity for any high school athlete, the team took on Mountain Vista in a Saturday afternoon game at Ball Arena.
The Westminster Wolves, after leading 21 to 14 at half time, got into foul trouble and lost a hard-fought game by the final score of 49 to 40.
“Even though we lost a close game, I thought the team played well,” said WHS senior, Lex Trujillo. “It was a bit of an adjustment playing in a pro stadium, but I really wasn’t as nervous as I thought I would be.”
Junior point guard, Mia Sanchez agreed that it was a day she will remember forever. “It was a once in a lifetime opportunity,” she said. Mia and her family made a day of it in Denver. After playing their afternoon game, ticket holders were invited back to watch the Nuggets beat the Atlanta Hawks in the evening game 128 to 108.
Athletic director, Jesse Hernandez also praised the fans who came to support the team. “A special shout out to the student section who were by far the loudest group in the arena that day,” he said, adding,
“Way to go WESTY!”
