Marzano Teacher is First in U.S. to Reach Teaching Milestone
Seth Abbott, a teacher at John E. Flynn A Marzano Academy is the first teacher in the country to achieve level three certification by Marzano Research in its High Reliability Teacher (HRT) Program. The HRT program is a rigorous, multileveled process in which outside instructors evaluate a teacher’s skills in the classroom and their ability to measure student progress in a competency-based system.
HRT designation carries a great deal of importance in the education community because the HRT creator, Robert Marzano, is one of the most widely respected education researchers in the country.
"It takes a lot of work to receive this level of certification," said Brian Kosena, principal of John E. Flynn A Marzano Academy. "It pushes you to the next level and makes good teachers great teachers." A part of the HRT certification program requires teachers to videotape their classroom instruction and submit samples to an independent review team.
Marzano helped Westminster Public Schools (WPS) develop its Competency Based System (CBS) a decade ago and has collaborated with the school in the development of John E. Flynn A Marzano Academy. The Innovation school delivers a quality education focused on academics and the development of social and emotional skills to prepare students to live productive, fulfilling lives. Students at Marzano Academies are required to commit to long term projects that give back to the school community.
It’s important to note the HRT program is not limited to professionals teaching in a Marzano Academy. Other WPS teachers, regardless of which school they are currently in, are encouraged to seek certification. The district has a limited number of sponsorship opportunities so teachers do not have to pay any costs.
